What is a Pre-Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

A Pre-Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a comprehensive, structured treatment model designed especially for children ages 9-12 facing mental health, early substance use, or screen-related challenges. Our IOP meets three evenings per week—Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday—from 4:30 to 7:30 PM—providing clinical care while allowing kids to maintain their daily routines such as school and family time.

Our program serves children ages 9 to 12 and their families at both intensive outpatient (IOP) and outpatient (OP) levels of care. It provides a balanced treatment experience designed to help pre-adolescents develop emotional awareness, healthy independence, and social skills while strengthening family communication and support.

Sessions are scheduled to accommodate school attendance and after-school activities. We work closely with parents, schools, and other care providers to ensure coordinated, individualized care aligned with each child’s needs.

Participants take part in regular individual therapy, group counseling, experiential activities, and educational workshops — all while maintaining their daily schedules. Our program integrates evidence-based therapies, psychoeducation, and family involvement to promote overall well-being. We emphasize Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) techniques, focusing on building coping skills, distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Families also learn about the connections between mental health, screen time, and substance use, empowering everyone for lasting change.

Does Your Family Need Help During These Difficult Pre-Adolescense Years?

These can be some of the toughest years to support your child’s emotional and mental well-being. We are amid a mental health crisis with rising rates of anxiety, depression, ADHD, self-harm, and other serious concerns in young pre-adolescents. Increasing screen time and social media exposure has been linked to this surge in mental health challenges.

According to the Surgeon General’s 2023 report, children who spend more than three hours a day on screens or social media double their risk of developing symptoms of depression and anxiety.

The statistics are sobering: one in seven children experience a mental health disorder, with many pre-adolescents showing signs of anxiety and depression. Early behavioral issues are common, and some children have thoughts of self-harm or suicide. In response, leading pediatric groups declared a national emergency in child and adolescent mental health in 2021.
